The BDP9000 Blu-ray disc (BD) player lets consumers take full advantage of high-definition displays, playing content at native 1080i or 720p video resolutions. The BD player includes a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) output, an industry-supported connection, providing for all video and audio on a single cable. This allows users to easily connect the Blu-ray player to their existing home televisions. It will also decode standard multi-channel audio. Philips' unique technology - one pickup with two lenses - allows it to also play standard DVDs and CDs in addition to Blu-ray discs while allowing for more cost-effective production. The supported DVD formats include DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R. Additional features of the BDP9000 include memory card reader, full audio format support, pop-up and always-on menu options; a full color high-definition animated button; and improved bitmap and text subtitles. The increased storage capacity of Blu-ray discs allows the Philips BD player to offer an astounding 25 GB of content on a single-sided disc (50 GB per dual layer) - nearly six times the capacity of traditional DVDs and enough space for two hours of high-definition movies or recorded content.

I never could get this product to play my Blu Ray discs. It plays my regular DVD's just fine, but for Blu Ray, I would recomend something better.

I am yet to have any problems with this player, it has played every Blu-Ray I've thrown at it flawlessly.

Great picture! After upgrading the firmware, the Philips BDP9000 had no problems playing Blu-ray discs including Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Philips hasn't appeared to keep up with their firmware updates, however, and the recent film SUNSHINE would not play at all. All was not lost, however, since the Philips machine is identical to the Samsung BD-P1000 (except for cosmetics) and Samsung appears to still be releasing regular firmware updates. I was able to update the firmware to the latest release for the Samsung BD-P1000 and play the film fine. Of course my Philips BDP9000 now thinks its a Samsung.

Some darwbacks of the Philips:

- No advanced onboard audio decoding or options

- Pressing STOP will often start the film over from the beginning

- SLOW startup/loading/disc tray opening

- May no longer be supported by Philips

Not too bad of a blu-ray player if you can find one for under $200.. though you may end up spending a lot more on a new receiver if you also want to play the new HD audio formats.

"Won't play my Blue Ray discs" 2008-01-16
By Chris R. Greentree (Boothwyn, PA United States)
I bought this player in June, I did not get a 1080p tv until Dec. The player plays my regular dvd's fine but when I tried a couple of blue ray discs I discovered. 1.The third Pirates Of The Carribien movie would only play the previews and the bonus disc, and 2.The third Resident Evil movie will not play at all. I called Phillips customer care and they sent me another player ( this took 10 days ). The replacement acted exactly the same as the first. After another call to Phillips I was finally told that this was a known problem and they would be getting back to me in a day or 2. I am still waiting for them to resolve the problem.

 "Won't Play Some Discs" 2008-01-10
By Brett J. Trout (Des Moines, IA USA)
For the money, I am pretty disappointed that this player will not play some discs. The discs are brand new, but shows like Weeds simply will not play. I signed up for Blockbuster to get blue-ray discs in the mail, but canceled the membership when the admittedly roughly handled discs would skip or lock up. Very unsatisfied.
