Bought this for my 13 year old son for Christmas 09. He uses it all the time and we have had NO problems with it at all. The screen is large enough where a few people can watch it at the same time.

 "Great Product" 2010-01-11
By Baylor Mom (Dallas, TX USA)
I bought this product for a trip to Hawaii; my son and I used it on the plane both ways and we loved it. The picture is great, the sound is great, it has two jacks so we could use our Bose headphones and didn't need a splicer. It's small (but not too small, you still get a great picture) and not too heavy; will easily fit into a large purse. You can also still see it when the bozo in front of you throws his/her seat back into your lap.....It was simple to recharge, too.

The only thing I wished it had is a longer battery life -- I think it has 6 hours, 8-10 would be ideal.

 "Money well spent....." 2009-12-30
By R. Weeks (Florida)
I bought 2 of these on June 30, 2008 (1.5 years ago)-- I pink and one blue. I came to write this review today because my son is in his room watching something on his and my wife is in our room watching something on the other.

Some history-- I purchased a "dual" brand for the back of the car's seats before I bought these. We never even took those out of the car and they broke within a month without the kids even touching them. I purchased these ones for our '08 summer vacation/long road trip. My kids use them in the car, at home, at sleepovers, on airplanes...everywhere! We don't even have cases-- they just hold them and move along.

The picture is super clear, the sound is great, the battery lasts forever.... No complaints. And it's still kicking after all this time. The kids drop them, stand on them, lose them at the bottom of the toybox.... you all get the idea.

I'd buy it again in a heartbeat!

 "Early product failure" 2009-12-13
By Robert J. Kard (San Diego)
I bought a Sony DVP-FX820 portable DVD player in July of 2008 and it has already failed after light usage. I liked the player a lot, but the video now ceases to work after two minutes of playing a DVD (the audio still works).

While Sony customer service answered the telephone quickly and they were very helpful in concluding it was a hardware failure, I am disappointed with premature failure of this DVD player. Clearly, this product has not lived up to Sony's reputation for relability.

Finally, potential buyers of similar Sony products should remain mindful of their crappy warranty, which is 90 days for labor and 1 year on parts. I wonder if this is indicative of Sony's lack of confidence in their own products? The labor alone will be $30 to $40 in this case, so I suggest using a credit card that doubles the manufacturer's warranty.

"VHS/Blu-ray good for husband and Grandpa" 2010-02-06
By Mother Jaybird (Central Cal)
To those who couldn't understand why this product would be attractive: My 80-yr old father had a VHS library that he enjoyed tremendously. When our last VHS player in the house died, we found that VHS players are relatively scarce, but found the Panasonic DMP-BD70V player. We have been very happy with it and my husband is happy to be upgrading to Blu-ray. My father died four weeks ago - we still have his VHS "Appaloosa" and "Dogs of War" on the counter. The value of the Blu-ray/DVD combo may be intuitive only to those who are taking care of kids and grandparents in the same household, but there are alot of us....

"Okay for a Second or Back-up Player" 2010-01-31
By prussianette (Grayslake, IL United States)
If you want a combination blu ray/vhs player, then this is the only game in town so you are kind of stuck right now. However, I must point out a number of limitations:

1.) As many pointed out (some of which are poor souls who didn't read carefully and bought without knowing this), there is no ability to record material on this. So if you record a weekly/daily program, you will still have to have a vhs or dvd recorder to do that.

2.) The component connection from this player to an HDTV did not work well with VHS tapes as the picture appeared all smudged. The tapes looked fine with an HDMI connection.

3.) I have trouble getting my remote sometimes to recognize I have a VHS tape in the player and often have to manually start the play. I have not had this problem when I want to play a disc, only VHS.

4.) This is not wireless, so to take advantage of the VIERA Cast if you are not close to your router, you must use an Ethernet adapter/access point (somewhere between $35 and $60 or more). I used an Asus WL-330gE purchased on sale at another site and chose the Ethernet adapater setting when configuring. I found this product worked perfectly with this blu ray player as it came with both the Ethernet cable as well either a plug-in power cord or a USB power cord. I used the USB power cord to plug into the USB slot on this blu ray player. Not only does using the USB power cord eliminate you having to plug another item into a power strip, but when you turn the player off, the USB power cord turns off as well, so you are not wasting electricity.

5.) Now, this is my biggest problem with this player. VIERA Cast. I specifically bought this player as a secondary blu ray for my bedroom (my primary player is in my family room), for two reasons-- the vhs component (I record off my primary player, so didn`t need to record on this one) and the announcement last year that VIERA Cast would have Netflix. I currently stream Netflix through my other player and was looking forward to streaming in my bedroom with this one as Netflix lets you stream on a number of devices with the same account. I now read (which was NOT in the announcement I read last year), that Netflix will be on Panasonic Blu Rays ONLY built in 2010 or later. Why? Because they completely re-built the technical infrastructure within the blu rays and only those with the new infrastructure will host Netflix. I guess they used up their "old parts" making this player figuring the VHS crowd wouldn't be interested in the newest technology.

I don't quite get the "usefulness" of VIERA Cast. The weather and stock parts are next to useless--if I really wanted to know the weather, I'd simply click to one of numerous weather stations that I get over the air. With regards to the stock market updates--I'd go to something on the internet as I would want to track my specific holding not just look at a generic stock market update. With NetCast (on the LG BD 90 blu ray player I have) I get YouTube, Netflix streaming (obviously have to have a Netflix account to take advantage of), as well as Vudu and CinemaNow that have pay per view rentals (most with option to buy). You do not get Amazon Video on Demand on the LG player as you do this player, but I would wonder how many movies Amazon might have that the other movie rental view options would not.

So, my best take on this player is if you need to record programs, or want to stream Netflix, do NOT buy this player. If you need to connect wirelessly, you must factor into the cost of this player an Ethernet adapter.

Am I keeping mine? Yes, because I bought at super sale price (around 165 dollars), so the cost of adding an Ethernet adapter was not prohibitive. It does eliminate the need for a vhs in my bedroom, and since I record through a dvd/vhs recorder in my family room, the lack of recording in this player does not affect me. However, I must now either choose not to stream Netflix to my bedroom, or buy a Roku.

If I do read that Panasonic has decided to add Netflix to the players with the "old" infrastructure (they are receiving some complaints obviously), I will update my review. If someone else reads such an announcement, please post a comment to my review with the source of the announcement.

 "Excellent Unit" 2010-01-28
By G. Carver (BROOKLYN, NY, US)
We have now used this player with Blue-ray, DVD and Video on a 1080P LCD TV (42"). We were very pleased with the DVD and Video quality given it is converting older formats. We watched "The man from Snowy River", a VHS tape we have watched many times (my wife's favorite) and the quality was as good as on the regular TV we used to watch it on when we first bought the tape 10 years ago. It does not make something bad better, but the upscaling or whatever they call it. The DVD quality was great. We watched the older Star Wars movies (original three) and the quality was fine. The Blue-ray was excellent as imagined. I would recommend using HDMI as it gave a clearer signal quality then cables.

Operation is simple. I acutally programmed my TV remote to control the player, but I also have used the units remote. Both work well. On my TV remote I can switch to HDMI and then run the whatever is loaded. I recommend loading only one of either VHS or DVD/Blueray. Then the unit automatically starts in play once you turn it on. I have not figured out how to switch between types (VHS or Disc likely need to read more).

In short, it works just like I was hoping. It plays everything I own, does it cleanly and clearly, with one simple compact unit. I do not need to switch back and forth. In the end, I am not sure that I paid more than two units and with one HDMI cable and one remote, I am a happy camper.

 "A Quick Look" 2008-03-26

Great picture! After upgrading the firmware, the Philips BDP9000 had no problems playing Blu-ray discs including Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Philips hasn't appeared to keep up with their firmware updates, however, and the recent film SUNSHINE would not play at all. All was not lost, however, since the Philips machine is identical to the Samsung BD-P1000 (except for cosmetics) and Samsung appears to still be releasing regular firmware updates. I was able to update the firmware to the latest release for the Samsung BD-P1000 and play the film fine. Of course my Philips BDP9000 now thinks its a Samsung.

Some darwbacks of the Philips:

- No advanced onboard audio decoding or options

- Pressing STOP will often start the film over from the beginning

- SLOW startup/loading/disc tray opening

- May no longer be supported by Philips

Not too bad of a blu-ray player if you can find one for under $200.. though you may end up spending a lot more on a new receiver if you also want to play the new HD audio formats.

I bought this player in June, I did not get a 1080p tv until Dec. The player plays my regular dvd's fine but when I tried a couple of blue ray discs I discovered. 1.The third Pirates Of The Carribien movie would only play the previews and the bonus disc, and 2.The third Resident Evil movie will not play at all. I called Phillips customer care and they sent me another player ( this took 10 days ). The replacement acted exactly the same as the first. After another call to Phillips I was finally told that this was a known problem and they would be getting back to me in a day or 2. I am still waiting for them to resolve the problem.

 "DO NOT BUY" 2009-12-31

This product produced a U61 error barely a year after we purchased it therefore the 1 year warranty was up and Panasonic was going to charge us $140 to service a machine that we originally bought new for less than that price. Throughout the year for every 2 DVDs we were able to burn successfully there was one that did not work properly. I'll never buy another panasonic!!

"Worked fine until audio input died" 2009-05-28
By mark-o (new jersey)
I was very happy with this Panasonic DVD recorder, and it worked great for about a year or so. But suddenly and without warning the audio inputs completely failed, and it will no longer record audio, only video. I disconnected and reconnected several times, but to no avail. Now all it's good for is playing DVDs, who wants to watch a video that's been recorded without sound?

"Panasonic knew the digital transition was coming" 2009-04-17
By L. Reinhold (Kansas)
We loved this recorder, had it since May 2007 and it worked great for recording over the air tv until we set up the digital converter box. Turns out the device does not have an ATSC digital tuner. That means we have to change the channel on the tv converter in advance of the program and remember to do so. Apparently, I can get a converter that has a timer and changes channels, but did not know that when I bought my Amazon warns that this does not have an ATSC tuner but Panasonic surely knew that the transition would make the product largely useless. There should be a class action against Panasonic.

 "Panasonic DVD recorder DMR-ES15S" 2009-02-26

I will start off by saying when the Panasonic DMR-ES15 was working, it did a great job, good features: watch one channel record another, multi-programming for different shows on different nights/different times, recorded on all types of disk, picture quality good. Over a year, but less than two the DMR-ES15S is dead msg "Cannot Read Disk" blank nor pre-recorded nor dvd movies. I too thought Panasonic made a durable product that would last longer. Repair; is to send it back to Elk Groove, IL and $130.00 to repair this unit. I agree with all the other people on how the problem started off, not recording on certain formats, noise as it tried to read a disk and last not reading any disk. This should constitute a RECALL for this unit by Panasonic... for everyone.

"It's a good product... while it works." 2009-01-09

I was pleased with this DVD-recorder until it broke after a year of use. I sent it to an authorized Panasonic service center and they fixed it. Allegedly the spindle motor was burnt and had to be replaced. In my opinion, I think that one should get at least 3 years of lifetime from a product like this.
